A call to combat discrimination in the workplace went out yesterday from Bahrain’s top union leader.
Many workers are being denied opportunities or recognition, despite Bahrain’s laws against discrimination, said General Federation for Bahrain Trade Unions secretary-general Salman Al Mahfoodh.
“Bahrain is a country that is against discrimination, yet nothing is being done to support those who deserve promotion but are being denied the chance, due to their colour, race, sect or ethnic background,” he said in a speech at the awards ceremony.
“This is the message I am directing to employers. They should know the success of their companies lies with those who are loyal to work and not to them.
“My brothers there are others who are creative, dedicated and talented but have been denied the privilege by their rogue employers and this has meant that they are not present with us here.
“But even if they are forgotten I am here to salute them.”
Mr Al Mahfoodh said that even with pride comes pain, as many people had been laid off last year as the recession bit.
“There are still many afraid that they may lose their jobs and hopefully their worries will be put behind them as we enter a new year,” he said.
“Bahraini employees should never fear that their jobs are at stake and that they will be replaced by expatriates, because from what everyone is seeing Bahrainis are still in demand in the market.
“If any employee thinks that his rights are being stolen or his dignity harmed, the federation will be always available.”
