8 women seeking elections

Eight Bahraini women have announced they intend to contest next year’s parliamentary and municipal elections, representing six per cent of total candidates.

Four of the candidates have definitely made up their minds to stand – and the remaining four are considered potential candidates.

Three are from the Muharraq governorate. Dr Aneesa Fakhro is seeking a parliamentary seat in the seventh constituency, Sabah Al Dossary for municipal elections in the seventh constituency and Badria Ali for a municipal seat in the eighth constituency.

In the Southern governorate MP Latifa Al Gaoud announced renomination for the seat she currently occupies at the sixth constituency and Amal Shereeda announced she will be contesting against Salafi cleric MP Jassim Al Saeedi, in an attempt to end his domination after eight years. In the Central governorate Fawzia Zainal proclaimed she will contest for a parliamentary seat in the eighth constituency and Latifa Bu Noata declared her intention to run against parliament chairman Khalifa Al Dhahrani.

Finally, Jameela Al Sammak announced her candidacy for the second constituency in the Capital governorate.

No female candidates have so far declared their intention to run for any of the constituencies in the Northern governorate.
