A Bahraini artist has returned home after hosting a solo exhibition of her sculpted ceramic works in Egypt.

Sculptress Dr Suhyla Al Safar was the first Bahraini to hold an art exhibition at the prestigious Cairo Opera House Hall of Fine Art.

She showcased 30 sculptures at the event.

Themes in the work included world issues such as the control of men over women, poverty in Africa, conflict in Palestine and Kosovo as well as the suffering of the Iraqi people under UN sanctions.

“They attracted a lot of attention and were highly welcomed and appreciated,” said Dr Al Safar.

A particularly well-received piece depicts 12-year-old Palestinian Mohammed Al Durra, who was killed by the Israeli soldiers on September 30, 2000, as he cowered behind a metal drum with his father Jamal.

“There was a great response (to the piece),” said Dr Al Safar.

“Someone told me nobody thought about capturing the event, though the world talked about it.”

She said the piece captured the “incredible cruelty” of Mohammed’s death. The exhibition, which was arranged with assistance from Egyptian Ambassador to Bahrain Azmi Khalifa, also included nudes, abstracts and colour-focussed works.
