A model employer

A Bahraini fishing boat owner who stepped in to help relatives when three of his men were killed in an accident at sea has been honoured by the Indian community.

Ghazi Mohammed Al Dossary was described as a “model employer and one of the most caring sponsors” by speakers at a reception organised by the Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre (KMCC) and the Nandi Association, at the KMCC auditorium in Manama.

Fishermen M K Yousif, P K Majeed and P T K Abdulla died when they were thrown into the sea from the fishing boat, in an accident off the Jaw coast on January 31.

The boat was returning with its catch when the steering cable snapped and all three fishermen were thrown overboard.

The first body to be recovered was of Mr Abdulla, and Mr Al Dossary accompanied his body back to India and attended the funeral at his home in Kodikal, Calicut.

He also visited the families of Mr Yousif and Mr Majeed .

Mr Al Dossary gave BD1,000 to each family as his first donation and also supported a fund-raising drive launched by the community.

The reception meeting was chaired by KMCC president C K Abdulrahman.

People who attended the reception gave a standing ovation to Mr Al Dossary.

Fund-raising committee convenor Jaffar Kadaloor presented him with a memento.

Meanwhile, the committee revealed that the fund-raising for the families had hit BD12,700, well past its target.

“Our target was BD10,000, but we were able to exceed it because of the support from individuals and organisations,” said committee vice-chairman K Abdulrahman.

“We are grateful to Shifa Al Jazeera Medical Centre and its managing director K T Rabiulla who contributed a handsome amount.

“Shifa general manager K T Mohammed Ali visited the site and offered to sponsor the education expenses for the children of all victims up to any extend they wish to study.”

Fishermen from Jaw, Askar, Manama, Sitra and Zallaq area contributed more than BD4,000, said Mr Abdulrahman.

Other donors included Mahe Association, Kudumba Sauhruda vedi, Al Furqan Centre, Bahrain Keraleeya Samajam, Sunni Jamaath, Mahallu Association of Trichur, Koyilandy Muslim Jamaath, Gold Link, Dawani Trading, Baghdad Aluminium, Nandi Association and branch committees of KMCC from Riffa, Muharraq and Jidali.

“We are also grateful to all individuals who worked hard towards the success of this venture ,” said Mr Abdulrahman. “Because of the success of a collective effort, we shall be able to contribute Rs.500,000 (BD4,233) to each family.”
