There’s no short cut to success…

There is no shame in starting at the bottom of the employment ladder and working your way up, says a top industry leader. Bapco president Dr Mustafa Al Sayed said it was very bad that unemployed Bahrainis were turning down jobs just because they thought the position was beneath them.

Competition in the workplace, he said, was tough and those who succeed are the ones who learn hard, develop good work ethics and who are willing to start from a modest job and strive to rise as quickly as possible.

“Every leader looks for young stars, they look for people with good potential,” said Dr Al Sayed.

“So I say accept any job, be in the game and take off with excellence.”

Almost half of the candidates offered jobs so far under the BD30 million National Employment Project have refused them, according to Labour Ministry officials.

Out of the 1,813 Bahraini job-seekers interviewed, only 977 have accepted the positions offered to them.

A total of 2,161 were called for interviews, but 348 failed to show up.

Dr Al Sayed said that because of increased competition in the workplace it was no longer a matter of picking and choosing a job at will without demonstrating abilities.

Instead, he said, people needed to accept a job, regardless of whether it was being a pipe fitter or an aeroplane technician, and have a proper attitude towards it and hope to progress.

“I left school at the age of 13 to work with no formal education because I had to help my family, but I never gave up hope,” said Dr Al Sayed.

“They should link it with hard work, there are no short cuts to success.

“Every job you do is good, even if you are a cleaner. Because one day you will be president and you must know the nature of these jobs.

“You can’t be a leader if you don’t go through these jobs. It’s a very bad attitude if you degrade jobs, every job is noble.”

Dr Al Sayed was speaking on the sidelines of The 33rd Asian Regional Training and Development Organisation (ARTDO) International Hum-an Resources Development Conference and Exhibition, which is being held at the Gulf Hotel’s Gulf International Convention and Exhibition Centre (GICEC).

ARTDO is organised by the Bahrain Society for Training and Development (BSTD), under the patronage of Prime Minister Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa.

Around 600 executives, managers, human resources and industry professionals from 60 countries are attending the conference, which concludes tomorrow.

Dr Al Sayed, as yesterday’s keynote speaker, presented a talk on the Key to Organisational Success.

In his speech, he highlighted the need for organisations to adopt scientific and mathematical models to help them monitor the changes they introduce and have them succeed.

Having core values (ethics) and leaders at all levels of responsibility, he said, were also key ingredients to the success of an organisation.

In particular, Dr Al Sayed spoke about his scientific models MOSIF and CREAMOC, which he said could be used to transport an organisation into success.

He said CREAMOC, a leadership and management concept that combined creativity, motivation and organisation, would provide what was needed to achieve MOSIF (Mission (vision), Objective, Strategy, Implement and Feedback), which was another leadership and management concept that helped organisations see the complete picture.

“Leadership is about achieving an organisation’s goals and objectives through MOSIF and CREAMOC,” Dr Al Sayed told the audience.

“In the future when you want to handle a strategic decision look at it in totality and combine it with a human element using a CREAMOC team.”

Today’s keynote speaker is Penang chief minister Dr Koh Tsu Koon and tomorrow’s will be International Labour Orga-nisation regional director for the Arab states Dr Taleb Rifai.

ARTDO, under the theme the Power Within: Strategies for Maximising Human Potential, features talks by more than 35 acclaimed speakers from 22 countries.

Speakers, from leading organisations, are discussing the latest topics related to the four conference streams: leadership, e-learning, future shape of work and developing self.

In addition to the main streams the conference also features a chief executive officer (CEO) forum, a concurrent exhibition of the latest human resources products and interactive workshops.

The CEO forum, taking place today, features six CEOs and is chaired by BSTD chief executive and advisor and International Federation of Training and Development Organisations (IFTDO) chairman Ebrahim Al Dossary.
